Outdoor furniture rewards a little regular care. Here is how we look after our two most-asked-about materials, timber and concrete or terrazzo tops, so your customers get years of good looks from every piece.
Timber: clean, protect, and let it age well.
Solid hardwood is our largest category. Looked after simply, it lasts for years and only gains character. The essentials are gentle cleaning, an optional oil, and keeping it dry.
Routine cleaning
A few minutes every few weeks keeps timber healthy and prevents build-up that traps moisture.
- Wipe down with warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush or cloth, working along the grain.
- Rinse with clean water and let it dry fully before use or covering. Trapped damp is the main enemy of outdoor timber.
- Avoid bleach, solvents and high-pressure washers, which strip natural oils and raise the grain.
Colour: keep the honey tone, or let it silver
Untreated hardwood such as teak weathers to an even silver-grey. This is purely cosmetic and does not affect strength.
- To keep the warm, freshly-made colour, apply a hardwood or teak oil once or twice a year, more in strong sun.
- Before re-oiling, clean the surface and let it dry, then sand lightly with fine paper if the grain has raised.
- To embrace the silver-grey patina, simply clean seasonally and skip the oil. You can always re-oil later.
Mould, mildew and stains
Spots of mildew are common in humid or shaded spots and are easy to remove early.
- Treat mildew with a mild oxygen-bleach solution, scrub gently, then rinse and dry.
- Clean food, sunscreen and oil marks promptly, before they soak in, using warm soapy water.
- For stubborn grey weathering you want gone, a dedicated timber cleaner or brightener restores tone before oiling.
Seasonal and storage
A little seasonal attention adds years, especially through wet or freezing months.
- Check and gently tighten bolts and fittings once or twice a year; timber moves with the seasons.
- Keep furniture off permanently wet ground, and store or cover it through prolonged wet or freezing weather.
- Store cushions dry and indoors when not in use; never pack them away damp.
Concrete and terrazzo: seal it, and keep it neutral.
Our fibre-reinforced concrete and terrazzo tops bring architectural weight to a setting. Keep them sealed and clean them gently, and they stay looking sharp outdoors.
Sealing is the foundation
Our fibre-reinforced concrete and terrazzo tops are sealed for outdoor use. The seal is what keeps them stain-resistant, and it is renewable.
- Reapply a suitable penetrating sealer periodically, typically once a year or when water stops beading on the surface.
- A fresh seal is the single best defence against stains, etching and weathering, so treat it as routine, not a repair.
- Follow the sealer maker's guidance on drying and coats; work in the shade on a dry, cool surface.
Everyday cleaning
Concrete and terrazzo like gentle, neutral care. Harsh or acidic products etch the surface permanently.
- Clean with a soft cloth or sponge and a pH-neutral cleaner or mild soapy water. Rinse and wipe dry.
- Avoid vinegar, citrus, bleach and abrasive pads or powders. Acids dull and etch the finish.
- Use coasters, mats and felt pads under hot dishes, drinks and rough-based objects.
Spills and stains
Sealed tops are forgiving, but concrete is naturally porous, so speed matters with anything that can stain.
- Wipe spills quickly, especially wine, coffee, oil and citrus, then clean the area with neutral cleaner.
- For a set-in mark, a poultice made for stone or concrete can draw the stain out without scrubbing.
- Reseal the area afterwards if the finish looks dull, to restore even protection.
Weather, winter and small marks
The tops are built to live outdoors, but water that freezes inside any masonry can cause damage over time.
- In freezing climates, keep tops drained and covered, or store them, so water cannot sit and freeze in the surface.
- Do not use de-icing salts on or near the tops; they attack concrete and terrazzo.
- Hairline surface marks are cosmetic; the fibre reinforcement resists structural cracking. Touch-up and re-seal as needed.
A simple seasonal rhythm.
Gentle clean with mild soapy water. Wipe dry. Bring cushions in if rain is coming.
Oil timber if you want the warm tone. Reseal concrete and terrazzo tops. Tighten fittings.
Cover or store furniture and tops. Keep everything drained and off wet ground.
