Weather-resistant, not weatherproof.
Our furniture is designed and built to live outdoors for years. That said, no outdoor furniture on the market is truly weatherproof, and any supplier who claims otherwise is overselling.
The right way to think about it: the frames and tops are made to stay outside through sun and rain, while cushions and fabrics are water-repellent and best brought in or stored when not in use. How long any piece lasts comes down to the material, your climate, and a little routine care.
Below is what to expect from each material, and what actually drives longevity, so you can specify with confidence and answer your customers clearly.
Expected life and weather resistance.
Realistic ranges for well-made furniture that gets basic care. Actual life depends on climate, exposure and how it is looked after.

Match the material to the conditions.
The same piece behaves differently on a shaded balcony and an exposed coastal terrace. The big four factors:
Strong sun and UV
UV fades colour and degrades cheap plastics and fabrics over time. Powder-coated aluminium, UV-stabilised wicker and solution-dyed fabrics hold up best. Some shade meaningfully extends the life of everything.
Rain and humidity
Water itself is fine; trapped moisture is the problem. Let timber dry, keep cushions off wet surfaces, and make sure furniture is not sitting in standing water. Good drainage matters more than a downpour.
Coastal salt air
Salt is tough on hardware and finishes. Aluminium and teak are the strongest coastal choices. Rinse furniture with fresh water occasionally, and specify stainless-steel fittings, which we use as standard where it counts.
Frost and freeze-thaw
Freezing water that has soaked into concrete, terrazzo or joints can cause damage over the years. In cold climates, cover or store furniture and tops through winter and keep them drained.
Longevity is built in, then maintained.
Two pieces in the same material can last very differently. These are the things that decide it, in roughly the order they matter.
- A weather-stable finish that customers can maintain, rather than a showroom coating that cannot be repaired outdoors.
- Stainless or properly coated hardware, so a fitting never rusts and stains or splits the material around it.
- Kiln-dried timber and mortise-and-tenon joinery, which move and rack far less through the seasons.
- Covers or off-season storage, the single biggest lever on how long any outdoor set lasts.
- Bringing cushions and fabrics in when not in use, which keeps them fresh far longer than leaving them out.
